Nightstand Frame

Main Nightstand PageInfo Top Drawers Front

I'm making thes entire project (except for plywood panels) from 2x8 material.   The frames will be made by ripping a 2x8 into 11/32" thick slices, 3" wide.   I'll join these with #20 biscuits.

Pieces for the nightstand frames after being machined from a 2x8.   Pretty nice looking, good enough for almost any use, nice straight grain with only a few knots, unfortunately the knots are usually large, but tight.
BTW: I will resaw the 2x8 exactly down the center then machine off the bandsaw marks so the resulting boards are a little under 1/2 of the 1-1/2" original thickness of the 2x8s.   I measured the thickness of these after machining and they are 23/32" thick.

Frame sets of one of the end frames laid out.

Test fit and marking biscuit positions.

The little tic mark I make for cutting the biscuit slot.

Biscuit slots cut, top piece is a frame cross brace, lower piece is a frame vertical.   You can see the little tic mark on the top of the vertical where I cut the biscuit slot.

Inset panel rabbet machined into lower inside edge of frame piece.

One frame end in the glue clamps.   The big knots are because I used 2x material but the knots are smooth and these pieces will be painted.   Note the matching pairs of knots, they are mirror image because the two verticals came from the same piece of wood.

Side frame pair.

Rounded outside edge where the inset panel will be.

Rabbet on the under side for the inset panel.

Dowel holes drilled in the ends of the small cross brace and bottom from bar.

Biscuit slots cut in ends of internal cross braces.   Remember these were cut from a 2x8, look at the end grain.

Lower inside front of one of the side braces, with biscuit slot and dowel holes for lower front bar.

Biscuit slot for rear bottom cross brace.

Two sets of side frames with all cross braces, bars etc.

1/4" dowel pins for cross bars braces.

My bag of #20 biscuits.   I keep them in a zip lock so they stay dry, remember they swell when damp.

Nightstand frame in glue.   I have two large Clampits holding the frame exactly square.   Also have 3 6" Irwin clamps clamping the front bar to the horizontal brace, there are 3 biscuits in that joint.

I made these little vertical stabilizers for holding things vertical while I assemble a larger frame.   They can clamp but its not usually needed just hold them vertical until I get the other pieces glued & clamped.   Yet another use for the tee tracks on my workbench.

Two vertical stabilizers on holding a nightstand frame square.

Closer look at a stabilizer.

Inset panels, back and slides installed.

Primed.   Notice the flat inset panels on the sides of the nightstands.   Just a little nicer than a plain flat side.

Painted, I left the insdie primed.
