Nightstand Drawers
Main Nightstand PageInfo Top Drawers Front

I'm making thes entire project (except for plywood panels) from 2x8 material. &nsbp; To make the drawer fronts and sides I will resaw the 1x8 down to 3/8" thick slices. &nsbp; The resawing on the bandsaw leaves marks so I'll run the slices across the jointer to remove them, also 1/32" of wood so I'll resaw an extra 1/32" of wicth. &nsbp; To make the drawer fronts I'll rip the 2x8 into 3/4" by 1" strips, miter them, then glue the joints with dowels. &nsbp;

This is how I mark for resawing.   This 2x8 has been ripped to 6" wide and now will be resawn, edgewise, into three 3/8" thick slices to make the sides, front, and back of the tall drawers.   Since the bandsaw leaves saw marks, I have to run the sawn surface across the jointer once to clean them up, hence, I add 1/32" when I mark for bandsawing.
3/8" + 1/32" = .40625".
In the past I have resawn 1x lumber for drawer sides/back/front, but they end up being 5/16" thick, here I'm shooting for a full 3/8" thickness.

Marked for resawing 3/8 + 1/32" slices on each edge.   I'll resaw the center section after the two edges are sawn to thickness.   These will become the drawer sides, front, and back.

Resawing on my bandsaw.

Note that I'm sawing the edge of the kerf on the line so the slice will be exactly 3/8" plus 1/32".   The extra 1/32" is what the jointer is set to take off.

3/8" thick X 6" wide slices for the drawer frame (front/back and sides).

One of the 2x8 center section being marked as another 3/8" + 1/32".

Drawer sets, 2 sides, 1 front, and one back stacked on the workbench.

You can see the rabbets cut on the lower inside edge, this is where the drawer bottom will be glued.

Dovetail jig set up on the workbench.

All dovetails cut.

Closer look at the dovetailed drawe sets, the two top pieces are tghe sides, the two lower pieces are thr front/back.   These are blind 1/2" dovetails cut into 3/8" thick pine.

Drawer frames being glued, the device clamped into the corner is a Rockler &quto;ClampIt" it holds the dawer square while the glue sets.

Closer look at the dovetailed corner.

Six of the tall drawers (6 ") stacked while the last two short are in the glue.

The two short or top drawers being glued.

I use this little glue brush to spread glue inside the dovetails.

Drawers being primed.   The front is left unpainted so I can glue on the inset panel frame.

Drawers installed in frame.
