04/03/16: Page Origin.
Last Easter, at Cindy's, we noticed a new trash bin made from wood and using a 39 gal. trash bag as a liner.
The outside measurements were 16-1/2" wide, X 11" deep, X 31" high.
I thought this was a good idea and decided to make one for our house.
Kelsey said she a wanted one for her house also.
The original was made from 3/4" plywood with the edges showing from the front.
I thought this was a little unsightly and a little heavy so I'll make the top from 1/2" plywood and miter the corners with the main front and sides 1/4" mitered corner plywood.
The top was a cap made from 1 x 3s and fitted around the trash bin proper to capture the trash bag (hide it's top foldover), and had a hinged plywood lid with no bumpers so it banged every time someone closed it.
Cindy has since added bumpers.
It was decorated with metal stars and other Texas emblems.
Betty has suggested we also make a smaller trash bin for our den that uses a 13 gal. trash bag.
Most of these are 13 gal. and measure 24" wide X 24" high laying flat.
The tall kitchen bags are 24" X 27" high.
A gallon is 231 in³ so 13 gallons are 3003 in³.
The larger bin is 16.5 X 11 X 31 high or 5626.5 in³ = 24 gal.
I accidentally broke the hinges off the lid on the Shop's trash bin.
So I added a restraining chain to the lid so it wouldn't flop all the way back.
I had some short chain segments left over after hanging the new LED lights in the shop so guess where the black chain came from.
2020:
I annually use one of these with our shredder.
Please take a look at my Shredder Page.

New trash bin.
I'm not really fond of pink but, thats how the 5mm underlayment comes primed, and I didn't repaint it.

With lid open.
Note it holds a large black trash bag (39 gal).

|
Note, the lid doesn't show the plywood edge, it's mitered too.

When I put the bumpers on, I had to saw a little off the hinge edge of the lid so the lid would still close flat.

In it's most convenient place where the 2" DC was (now under the bench).

Note the 1-1/2" casters.

Again, no plywood edge at the edge of the lid.
This is the old handle before I came up with the tee handle.

Its great to have a trash bin that fits the trash sack.

The trash bin's home, where the 2" DC was (its now under the bench behind the trash bin).
The pink is the color of the 5mm underlayment I use to build boxes, you'll notice its every where (ubiquitous) in my shop.

Kitchen Bin
|
Kitchen trash bin.
The bin is made from 1/4" sanded pine plywood and painted.
The cap from 1/2" birch plywood painted with clear polyurethane.
Note the tee handle.
The overlapping cap (lid) hides the 39 gal. trash sack fold over at the top, makes things look neater.

With the top open, thats a 39 gal. trash sack.
BTW: I put 1/4" felt pads on the bottom of this bin and the step stool to prevent scratching our laminate floors.
It also makes them easy to slide around.
In fact, every piece of furniture in our den and dining room have felt pads on their legs for the same reason.

Yes, Nanny's socks don't match.
This is not unusual.

Nanny wanted her bin painted white and the cap clear.
Kelsey is going to stain her's.
