We decided the queen bed in the corner bedroom was way too large for the space, so I set out to design and build a single twin with storage under it.   The Twin mattresses we found were 37-1/2" wide by 75" long.

The headboard and footboard will be 1-1/2" by 1-1/2" square corner post with mortise and tenon on the ends of the 3 horizontal pieces.   The side bed rail will be a 1x4 with a 1-/1/2" X 1-1/2" square stringer glued to it should be strong enough to hold up the mattress, the storage drawers, and a sleeper.   A 1x4 lower side rail with two 1x4 internal cross frames between the drawers will add plenty of strength to the overall frame as well as keeping the drawer guides aligned.   The cross frames will have 1/4" alignment pins into the side rails.   A 5/16" hanger bolt with 3/8" alignment pins in the end of each side rail will hold the head/foot boards to the side rails.   I will make inset panels, good on both sides, for the upper headboard and footboard with one outside only on the lower panels.   The tenons in 2x material will be 3/4" wide and 1/2" high leaving 3/8" shoulders on the side and 1/2" shoulders on the ends.   The tenons in 1x material will be 1/4" wide and 1/2" high leaving 1/4" shoulders except on the ends where I want 1/2" shoulders.

Inset Panels
The inset panels will have a pine face (front side) 1/8" thick laminated to a 3/16" plywood core.   Three pine panels will be resawn 1/8" thick from each 1x6 then edge joined in the cases requiring panels greater than 5-1/2" wide (1x6 width).

We no long have the twin bed, we gave it to Kyle for his son Caleb.   Instead now we have a treadmill and a work table in it's place.
