Small Hand Tool Storage
Mitering Thin Plywood Back to Storage Page. French Cleats.

Ever since I've owned the house, I've used the simple small tool storage bar the original owner built, but its time for a change!   I have just built french cleat storage to replace the shelves above the SE bench and South Wall sink and now I can re-do the small hand tool bar.

I'll build small cleat boxes 9" wide and 3" deep similar to the wall storage bins.   Screwdrivers will go across the back with 3/8" holes and pliers hang in from in 3/4" holes (see diagram.   The larger screw drivers will have to hang in the fron holes.

Original tool bar storage.   Sorry for the blurred pic, I realized I didn't have a "Before" pic and had to blow up and crop an old pic of this side of the shop.

Cleats screwed to studs.

I discovered hammers don't need any other support, just hang on the cleats.

Boxes being glued.   Note the small holes in the back are for screwdrivers, the larger holes in fron allow pliers to hang over the front lip.

Similar shape to the larger cleat boxes, helps to support the front lip etc.

Here they are most all screwdrivers and pliers, that I keep handy, in the small cleat boxes.   And I have a lot of space left over.

Closer look at the hammers hanging on cleats.
