Plugging Knot Holes
|
When I make inset pine panels I like knots but in resawing and planing the 1/8" thick panels knots frequently fall out.
You can plug Small knots using this technique.
So I have come up with s scheme to plug the knot holes, by drilling out the old knot hole with a forstner bit, cutting a similar grained plug with a plug cutter, and gluing it in the drilled hole.

The knots frequently come out when resawing 1/8" panels.

Another missing knot.

Another 1/8" thick piece of pine sawn earlier.
I'll use this to cut plugs from.

5/8" plug cutter and forstner bit.

Edge joined pine panel with 2 missing knots.

Drilling out a perfectly round hole where the knot used to be.

5/8" hole drilled.

With the drilled dust cleaned off, a perfect hole.

About to cut plugs.
|
|
One plug cut, still in the cutter.

|
Leaves an ugly hole.

Some of the 5/8" plugs I just cut.

Plug beside the drilled hole.

I use a block of wood and a mallet to drive in the plugs.

Plugs driven into the round holes I drilled.

Closer look at plug driven in, I could have done a little better job of matching the grain.
Sanding is next.
