South Wall Remod

Part of this shop revamp is to move 10 of the long boxes on the East wall to the South wall.   The first step was to make a roll-around parts rack for the plastic bins on the South wal and the bolt bin on the East wall.   The next step is go remodel the lower South wall shelf so it can accept 10 long boxes from the East wall.   I decided to remove 66" of the existing shelf and replace it with 4 shelves to hold 24 long boxes.

The existing East wall shelves only allow for 12 long boxes, but I intend to put 24 in that same space (ignoring the two under the drawers to the right of the sink).   I'm removing 66" of the West end of the shelf and replacing it with 3 shelves plus allowing use of the floor, for a total of 4 rows of 6 boxes.   I'll leave the drawers on the right of the sink (they're too handy) and an additional 4" of shelf, this means I can keep the 2 long boxes under the drawers.   It will also leave about a 24" wide work shelf, 40" high, right of the sink for mixing paint and cleaning brushes.

The current South wall, note the parts bins on top of the shelf, they have since been moved to the small parts rack.   Also, I have removed the shelves above the sink and put in french cleats with bins.

Everything cleared out.   I moved the plastic parts bins to the parts rack then removed the shelves.

Building lower shelf.   You can't see it but there are 2x4s screwed to the studs to support the back of the frame.   I also drilled 1/4" holes in the concrete and anchored the support verticals there.

I used pocket hole screws to hold the frame together instead of the staples the previous owner used.

Shelves complete, boxes moved.   Note all the original boxes plus the ones from the East wall.   I'll probably extend two of the french cleats on the wall above the drawers.
