Old Furniture

We have a couple of old pieces of furniture, mostly from my grandpaents.   One is an old buffet which was a gift to my grandmother, the other is a small spindle table purchased by my grandparents as the first piece of furniture they bought after they were married.

Sometime during the depression, my grandmother helped a neighbor family, the lady of the house had been taken seriously ill.   Grandmaw cooked, cleaned, and did house work for the family (while keeping up with her own house) until the lady could take over again.   The family gave my grandmother this buffet, in gratitude, for helping.   It originally had a bevel edged mirror which had been stained to the point of no return, so I replaced it with a plate glass mirror.

This spindle table was purchased by my grandparents, second hand, right after they were married in 1911 (as their first piece of furniture).   The radio used to sit on this table, at my grandparents, when I was a little boy.   I remember listening to Edward R. Murrow broadcasting from London right after WWW-II, no one had TVs in those days.   I also remember listening to Sky King, The Shadow, Suspense, The Lone Ranger, and many others on it.   I used it as an end table in my den for a while, the top was a little high but I liked the middle shelf.

As it sits today, the place of honor beside the fireplace in the den.   This and the buffet, are the only things I have that belonged to my father or his parents.
