Bowls
Lathes

I made a few bowls several years ago and enjoyed it very much.   I especially liked the color contrast of using white pine and cedar.   These first bowls were made from solid boards cut into squares and laminated together.   I made a lot of the "candy dish" bowls (above left) and gave them to the ladys in the family at Christmas.

I started out with a Jet mini lathe and later graduated to the 14" Delta Iron Bed lathe then to the Jet JWL1442VS which is a really great lathe..

These are the first two bowls I made, the one on the left was made in 2006.

Cedar and white wood boards, sawed and ready to laminate.   The lighter color are white wood (white pine or fir), the darker boards are cedar.

All these bowls started out as boards, cut into squares, and laminated together.   Here is a large bowl laminate, made from cedar and white wood 1x8s.   The center is marked and a circle drawn for the periphery sitting on the bandsaw ready to cut out the circular bowl blank.   I'll use the center mark to mount the face plate to turn the outside of the bowl.

A couple of bowl blanks laminated and cut out.   The one stripe on the left and a two stripe on the right.

My original Jet Mini Lathe, ready to work.

One of my original bowls on the Jet after outside shaping.   I start out with a face plate mounted in the center of the bowl's mouth and turn the outside shape of the bowl.   Notice I turned a spigot on the bottom so I can hold it there while opening the inside.   You can see the face plate on the left, it is mounted in the center using the center marks placed on the glueup.

The same bowl with the gouge rest moved out of the way, you can see the spigot better.
